    On The Alliance of Executive Education and Research inInformation Management at the University of Amsterdam

    Over the past fifteen years, Information Management (IM) has emerged as a management sub discipline, both in academic research and in practice. The creation of an Information Management Chair at the University of Amsterdam reflects the importance. What started as a chair in Information Systems on the periphery of the Faculties of Economics and Computer Science, now incorporates a fully integrated discipline in the Amsterdam graduate Business School. Its main activities are the running of Bachelors and Masters programs in Business Studies and Information Studies (both with a major in IM), the Executive Master in Information Management (EMIM) program and the PrimaVera (a playful acronym for PRogram in Information MAnagement at the uniVERsity of Amsterdam) research program. This research note predominantly deals with the combination of the latter two. IM is a young discipline, still struggling with its theoretical identity and its role and place in organizations. Our approach to IM is primarily aimed at keeping the significance of IM to practice (and hence overcoming the common belief that \u27academic\u27 stands for being \u27impractical\u27), yet conforming to and applying academic rigor to the discipline. This approach was shaped by 15 years of experience in aligning executive education and research. The incessant interaction of education and research and of university and business simultaneously is noticeably helpful in highlighting the very concept of IM and its constituent parts. Teaching at the frontline of an emerging discipline give rise to innovative combinations of learning and research in which the specific expertise of executive students as reflective practitioners is exploited. These observations are in line with the often-heard appeals to study and develop IM in innovative, generative and action-based ways. In this respect, traditional academic ivory tower approaches are too distant to be relevant to practice. This research note gives an account of the (as far as we are aware of: unique) combination of executive education and research in IM as it is practiced at the University of Amsterdam. To this end, we first elaborate on the joint learning model and notion of IM, after which we discuss the EMIM program in brief and the PrimaVera research program more at length

    The architectural metaphor has played an important role in many aspects of IS/ICT since the1970s. One key influence in this has been Zachmanñ€ℱs ISA, first introduced in 1987. This isnow a pivotal aspect of the domain, but it has developed in a lop-sided fashion with thestructural features of the architectural trope effacing the cognitive ones. This paper focusesattention back on the neglected aspects of the architectural metaphor, arguing that a morecomprehensive and accomplished conception of the role of the information architect and thenature of information architecture are critical for current IS/ICT practices

    Information Leadership: The CIO as Orchestrator and Equilibrist

    The dominant interpretation of the function and role of the CIO is technology-related with business-ICT alignment as a core concept. We criticize this vision as a product of the dominant interpretive scheme and show how the logic of this scheme restricts the worldview of CIO’s and researchers. To overcome these restrictions, we adopt an alternative interpretive scheme based on our twenty years of experience with collaboration with information managers. This scheme is essentially generative and synthetic. We define the function and role of the CIO as the orchestrator of the information-related activities of the organization. To be successful, the CIO should further maintain equilibrium between inspiring and innovating the organization and informing and architecturing it. Finally, we argue for the use of a new language that can involve all stakeholders in these activities to make them enthusiastic participants. Based on this new view, the CIO can emanate information leadership

    Educating Professionals Leveraging Diversity in Globalizing Education

    This chapter is based on the premise that globalization will lead to increased cultural diversity in educational settings that can be leveraged into enhanced learning capabilities for all those involved. It also posits that leveraging diversity can and will be used by universities while competing and cooperating globally. Much of the literature on globalization warns against market values increasingly dominating academic values and basic human needs, and against ñ€˜Americanizationñ€ℱ or cultural homogenization. By distinguishing five categories of globalization effects on higher education, we argue that globalization is a much broader issue that leaves ample room for individual universities, faculties, business schools, and sections to construct their own responses to globalization and, in that way, help shape its future course. The second part of the chapter illustrates how one section of one university is responding to globalizing education. It discusses the learning by sharing concept and shows how this concept was used in three recent education initiatives to leverage diversity in the classroom. These initiatives indicate how the five globalization effects on higher education can be exploited in concrete educational settings. They also demonstrate that leveraging diversity is a learning process in itself. The lesson learned from these initiatives are therefore discussed in the final section

This paper reports on an experiment in Amsterdam,where civil servants, with their inherent focus on \u27feasible\u27 solutions, were co-learning with Master\u27sstudents and researchers, with an equally inherent focus on the exploration of what is \u27thinkable\u27. Theresults were \u27achievable\u27 outcomes meeting the demands of citizens. Critical success factors appear tobe the organized disruption caused by the triangulation, the clear-cut occurrence of a comprehensionphase prior to policy making and the combination of bottom-up approach and top-level support

    Unveiling the nonlinear optical response of Trictenotoma childreni longhorn beetle

    The wings of some insect species are known to fluoresce under illumination by ultraviolet light. Their fluorescence properties are however, not comprehensively documented. In this article, the optical properties of one specific insect, the Trictenotoma childreni yellow longhorn beetle, were investigated using both linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) methods, including one- and two-photon fluorescence and second harmonic generation (SHG). These three distinct optical signals discovered in this beetle are attributed to the presence of fluorophores embedded within the scales covering their elytra. Experimental evidence collected in this study indicates that the fluorophores are non-centrosymmetric, a fundamental requirement for SHG. This study is the first reported optical behavior of this type in insects. We described how NLO techniques can complement other more convenient approaches to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of insect scales and integument properties

    4E Interacting Protein as a Potential Novel Drug Target for Nucleoside Analogues in Trypanosoma brucei

    Human African trypanosomiasis is a neglected parasitic disease for which the current treatment options are quite limited. Trypanosomes are not able to synthesize purines de novo and thus solely depend on purine salvage from the host environment. This characteristic makes players of the purine salvage pathway putative drug targets. The activity of known nucleoside analogues such as tubercidin and cordycepin led to the development of a series of C7-substituted nucleoside analogues. Here, we use RNA interference (RNAi) libraries to gain insight into the mode-of-action of these novel nucleoside analogues. Whole-genome RNAi screening revealed the involvement of adenosine kinase and 4E interacting protein into the mode-of-action of certain antitrypanosomal nucleoside analogues. Using RNAi lines and gene-deficient parasites, 4E interacting protein was found to be essential for parasite growth and infectivity in the vertebrate host. The essential nature of this gene product and involvement in the activity of certain nucleoside analogues indicates that it represents a potential novel drug target.</jats:p

The phylum was expanded by four families (Aliusviridae, Crepuscuviridae, Myriaviridae, and Natareviridae), three subfamilies (Alpharhabdovirinae, Betarhabdovirinae, and Gammarhabdovirinae), 42 genera, and 200 species. Thirty-nine species were renamed and/or moved and seven species were abolished.
